For my final year project I wanted to investigate how our society responds to dementia. My research led me to explore how frequent violent outbursts result in a decline of executive functioning. Despite there already existing methods to calm an agitated dementia sufferer, many cases go unaddressed because of a lack of information between caregiver and recipient.
My project thus resulted in the design of a smartwatch that allows caregivers of people with dementia to know in advance if their care recipient is in a volatile state. The result would be that violent outbursts are pre-emptively avoided due to time-based and accurate bio-sign tracking.
The design started in the form of a soft glove, ending up as a compact watch and band. The soft plastics ensure that there are no metal components to snag on elderly skin. For constant tracking of bio-signs, the device is worn when active, requires a caregiver to remove the band.
